Four main strategies for environmental protection were covered, namely: minimizing the amount of waste generated; reducing the toxicity of waste; finding more satisfactory ways to dispose of waste; and biotechnological solutions aimed at reconsidering waste as a resource to produce valuable raw materials of interest. The impact of policies and regulations on biotechnology is identified along with an analysis of the development of the recycling bioeconomy.
