On December 16, 2024, an event dedicated to one of the most pressing environmental issues — waste sorting — was held at the Hub on Kuznechna Street in Sumy. Organized by the "City of Smart People" team, the event brought together leading experts who emphasized that proper waste management is a crucial step toward preserving the environment and creating a comfortable urban space.
Associate Professor of the Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection Technologies, Ph.D. Dmytro LAZNENKO, joined the discussion. Participants exchanged views on key challenges in household waste management, such as the lack of proper infrastructure and low public awareness. Special attention was given to the real opportunities waste sorting provides and ways to integrate these practices into daily life.
Experts highlighted that sorting waste should begin at home. Convenient infrastructure, accessible containers for different types of waste, and regular public education campaigns can drive positive change. The discussion also touched upon the successful experiences of other countries, where waste sorting has become a cultural norm, helping to save resources and create new recycling opportunities.
The organizers encouraged city residents not to delay action: even small steps, like sorting a single bottle or piece of paper, are significant. After all, the cleanliness of the city and the state of the environment depend on each of us!
