On October 1, the project “Biogas Partnership” (BioPart): co-creating a pathway to boost biogas solutions in the Baltic Sea Region" was launched. One of the partner organizations is Sumy State University, represented by the Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection Technologies. This project is implemented within the framework of the Baltic Sea Neighborhood Program and financed by the Swedish Institute.
The most important key aspects of this collaboration should be different biogas solutions including biomethane production to enable natural gas substitution in the Baltic Sea Region and digestate valorization in terms of its application as biofertilizer with capacity of soil remediation, especially in the post-war period.
The kick-off meeting, held on 21st November 2024 at the Polish Biomethane Organisation in Warsaw, brought together all key partners from Linköping University (Sweden), Poznan University of Life Sciences (Poland), Polish Biomethane Organization (Poland), Sumy State University (Ukraine), Bioenergy Association of Ukraine to align on goals, roles, responsibilities and next steps.
We discussed the Implementation and Communication Plan, the Budget, introduced into the reporting procedure and audit measures. We also planned all the future activities and workshops in details during the project implementation.
The first workshop of the BioPart Project took place on November 22, 2024, in Warsaw, Poland. Around 30 participants from academia, non-governmental organizations, and various stakeholders, companies from biogas sector, municipalities gathered for the event.
The workshop focused on exploring the national potential of biogas and biomethane production in the partner countries—Sweden, Poland, and Ukraine. The main goal was to identify opportunities for cross-country collaboration and to pave the way for the expansion of biogas solutions across the Baltic Sea Region. Presentations by the speakers provided valuable insights into both the current and future potential of biogas and biomethane production in each country.
The workshop concluded with a discussion on how to realize national potential, involving all participants both in-person and online. Participants have gained competencies and skills in how to increase implementation of biogas solutions to realize the existing national potential.
We look forward to more fruitful discussions in our next workshop.
